About Us

Transformation from the Wan Chai Livelihood Place to the Hong Kong House of Stories

Thanks for all your valuable support to the Wan Chai Livelihood Place in the past five years.   Your support has enabled us to develop activities more responsive to community needs and to build more diversified services.

Holding the objectives of "Where traditions are conserved and diverse cultures converge", Wan Chai Livelihood Place strives to arouse public concern on the regional and cultural conservation through diverse and interactive ways.  Since 2007, the Place has organized more than 20 exhibitions on local culture.  In addition, we have trained Wan Chai inhabitants as cultural tour-guides to lead community tours in Wan Chai and Central, also we started to offer English tours since 2010.  More than 6,000 participants have joined our community tours over the past four years.  In 2011, we launched the "Community Classroom” to bring a break through to the traditional top-down and vocational skills-based learning approach.  We invited traditional craftsmen, young artists, organic farmers and housewives as instructors to pass on the culture and craft skills of the old community.

With the Hongkong Bank Foundation's sponsorship, Wan Chai Livelihood Place will morph into the Hong Kong House of Stories in March 2012.  We are ready to expand our area of concern to include the community cultural issues of Hong Kong.  In addition to the existing projects, we will cooperate with different partners to host a wider variety of community cultural activities including: 1) public exhibitions, 2) community-guided tours, 3) arts and culture promotion activities, 4) workshops, 5) record and publishing, 6)Research on community histories and cultures, so as to help the public develop more in-depth discussions on the community and cultural conservation topics.  We also strive to enhance the variety and depth of activities in order to prepare for the official launch of the “Viva Blue House” Revitalization Project in 2014.
