Love for All Seasons

Love for All Seasons - Marriage in Hong Kong through the years

In centuries past, marriages were considered vital for the continuation of ancestral line and forging alliances between two families. The unions were celebrated with strict adherence to traditional wedding practices and rituals. Parents and senior members of the clans were consulted from betrothals to formal wedding confirmations. Every aspect of the marriage preparation, from arranging dowry to hand delivering invitations, were handled by family and clan members.

In recent times, this intimate family involvement behind traditional weddings has been replaced by the services of wedding planners. A handful of traditional practices have been modified for use but most are no longer followed. Huge emphasis is placed on creating a sensational show at wedding banquets. Weddings became very fabricated and lacking in the appreciation of the significance of traditional wedding ceremonies.

Wanchai Livelihood Place will explore the shift of this societal tradition and reflect on the socio-cultural context of modern day weddings. On display are exquisitely embroidered wedding gowns. An array of traditional items used in Chinese wedding rituals and a collection of wedding pictures let you trace the changing customs throughout the past century.
