Fashion and Garment – Yesterday and Today
This exhibition displays the development and changes of Hong Kong’s fashion since the 20th century. Garment making was once a major occupation in Wanchai. Hong Kong started industrialization in the early 60s when the economy set to grow. Ladies were never stingy in their clothing expenditure while the influx of off-duty armed forces coming from various Asia/Pacific battlefields helped to bring sizeable business to local tailors who specialized in western suits. Nevertheless, cheaper ready-made clothes resulted from mass production gradually replaced those tailor-made. The Wanchai neighbourhood however still marvelled at the excellent craftsmanship of the tailors.
